Which Genre Does Lynn Prefer?

Which genre of books do you prefer? Fiction or non-fiction? Mystery or fantasy? Perhaps it’s dystopian or romance. There are many genres to choose from, and then there are sub-genres.

Lynn Lapthorne spoke about the genres she enjoys (and doesn’t enjoy) in a recent post. It starts like this:

Come see what genres await you at our Author Read and Bookshop, May 4th and 5th, at the Milford Recreational Centre. You may just find your new favourite author, or genre, that you weren’t expecting!

Why Write Poetry?

Not long ago, Lynn Lapthorne wrote a blog post with this title: Why Write Poetry? Here’s how it starts:

What a loaded question! Everyone will have different reasons I suppose.

Some will say they are comfortable and it comes easily to them. They may have no desire to write anything else. Others may say they sit for hours, days on end, to get a poem exactly where they want it to be; to say exactly what they want to say.

Meet the Author: Lynn Lapthorne

Lynn Lapthorne is a local author and the founding member of the East Hants Writers. Lynn will be participating in the 2nd Annual Author Read & Bookshop the first weekend in May in Milford. More information about the event can be found on their page.

Lynn is a poet, a children’s author, and writer of fantasy and alternative folklore. She has published Never Again, a small book about Covid, and Don’t You See? which is the children’s view of how Covid changed their lives.

The first book in Lynn’s ‘Silly Rhyming Story Series’ is The Interrupted Bath, which Lynn will be reading at the Author Read & Bookshop this coming May 4th and 5th. It’s pure nonsense that Lynn made up for her sons when they were little. There are more stories for the series planned but they are in early stages of editing yet.

Writing poetry and stories is something Lynn has done for as long as she can remember. She weaves her imagination into her everyday life and can always find a story to tell children. Lynn recently ran a youth writing workshop through the East Hants Community Learning Association. She was amazed at the way the children’s imaginations took flight when they were told there were ‘no silly ideas or questions that couldn’t be used in the stories.’

This past year, Lynn released her first collection of poetry, The Crooked Fence. Inside the pages of this book of poetry, you’ll find yourself in life’s hands and see the struggle and triumph that you go through.

The Elmsdale Library just hosted Lynn for her first public read of The Crooked Fence. The room was full, the poetry flowed and the guests were enthusiastic!

Lynn will be reading from The Crooked Fence on Saturday May 4th during the Open Mic Poetry Night portion of the Author Read & Bookshop. (People of the surrounding community are invited to come up and read something of their own!)

Comments from a reader of The Crooked Fence:

My daughter gifted copies of your book “The Crooked Fence” to me and my sister for Mothers’ Day.

It is a beautiful collection of poetry-on so many topics, but with such sensitivity and honesty. We each have favourites! Thank you for sharing these incites with us.

May you continue to help us see the world around us through your eyes and words!

Lynn Lapthorne: Read Poetry? No…Yes!

Creator of East Hants Writers’, Lynn Lapthorne, is a poet and a writer of children’s stories and alternative folklore. She is one of several authors participating in the 2nd Annual Author Read & BookShop on May 4th and 5th.

Lapthorne has her own blog where she discusses writing and poetry. Here’s a snippet of one of her posts.

Poetry isn’t for everyone.

Why would a poet make that statement? Am I crazy? I’m saying that because it’s the truth. So many things come into play when you read poetry. It depends on the reader, the poet, their style, the topic, and, their heart.

A New Poetry Book for Lapthorne

You’ve read that right. Founding member of East Hants Writers Lynn Lapthorne is releasing a new book. And it’s all poetry. Music to the ears.

It’s called The Crooked Fence, and she spoke about it on her blog. Here’s a snippet.

I’ve written poetry all my life. When the work was done on the farm, homework finished and I was supposed to sleep…that was my time. I wrote on a scribbler in the dark every thought that came to me. My imagination ran free. But, I soon realized that poetry was the road to my feelings. to my soul.
